Sentosa, Singapore, January 19: Read what players have to say following the penultimate round of the SMBC Singapore Open on Saturday.
Yoshinori Fujimoto (Jpn) – Third round 66 (-5), Total 200 (-13)
Glad that we finished the 3rd round before suspension. I was not expecting to finish when I was playing front 9. From the 1st round, my shots being straight so that was the cause for good score. Really tired now, but at the same time enjoying international players. They played with good rhythm so I enjoyed watching. Maybe that why I was smiling. I just concentrate on my golf, so I am not thinking about that (The Open spots).
It is nice to have good result, winning the tournament, because we all play golf to win. All the good players are on the top, but I like to enjoy and show good golf to the spectators. I made an eagle on the seventh hole. I had like 270 yards to the green for my second shot. I thought I hit it closer but still managed to sink that eagle putt. It was good.
I made a good save from the bunker on the fifth. That was a good up and down. My family is in Japan and supporting me all the time. I like to give them good news tomorrow. It’s been a while since I won. I am glad I am in a good position to win tomorrow.
Jazz Janewattananod (Tha) – Third round 65 (-6), Total 201 (-12)
I am in a good position. I really hope to get one of the four spots to The Open. That’s my goal right now. You need to be patient on this course. There are some holes where you will make it and some holes where you won’t. You just need to hit good shots on the right holes and miss it on the right sides of the holes.
I made my Major debut at The Open last year. It was a really eye-opening experience for me. I think that is also the reason why my game has improved so much. I learned a lot that week. I hit a lot of low shots that week and that’s something I haven’t done much here before.
Everyone wants to win tomorrow. I want to win as well but there are really a lot of good players out here. If I keep telling myself to win this, I will put a lot of pressure on myself. I just want to play my game and keep hitting good shots and try to get one of the four spots for The Open.
It’s do-able if I don’t make any mistakes. I will try my best tomorrow. I finished well in my second round this morning. I had three straight birdies coming in. I kind of repeated that good form into the third round today.
It was a slow start for me though, missed a couple of birdie putts on the par-five. My game only started to pick up from the sixth hole.
Paul Casey (Eng) -Third round 68 (-3), Total 203 (-10)
I just wanted to finish, I just wanted a line. I didn’t want to get up at 5am in the morning again for a 7:30 restart. But then once we were going, Poom did a great tee shot down the last so I knew we were going to finish. It was a good attitude trying to tackle that last hole. I was obviously making a couple of errors in the last few holes, I was falling behind. I knew -13 was going to be the leading score and I had to get to double digit. So I did that, great six-iron in to last in the darkness. Luckily, I read the putt when I got onto the green – it was still pretty bright. We had great lights coming out of the hospitality suite and the TV from the other side. Yeah, I finished off good.
The plan is to be aggressive tomorrow. The front nine was better today, I think I was a couple under on the front nine, which I haven’t been so far this week. But I need to put the two together. I have played the back nine typically quite well, so it is two-three under a week. On the front end I’ve struggled. Tomorrow, I just need to put it all together. Good front and good back. Guys are going to go and try and get loads more. I imagine some are going to get 16, maybe 17 under. So I have to shoot 6 or 7 at least and that might not even be good enough. Guys like Fitzpatrick up there are in a strong place, so it’s going to be a fight – it’s going to be fun.
Chapchai Nirat (Tha) – Third round 66 (-5), Total 203 (-10)
I knew the pins will be difficult in the third round, based on my past experiences. I kind of knew how to play safe and when to play safe. I expected myself to putt well on the back nine. My putting was good. This is a golf course that suits my game. I had fun out there today.
I tried not to be too aggressive today, I just played safe. I was one-under on my front nine and the turning point came on the 10th where I made a really long putt for birdie. I managed to pick up some momentum from there and went on to make three more consecutive putts.
I just want to have fun and not expect too much. I have a good caddy this week. He helped me a lot and we were just having fun out there. He helped me to stay relaxed. I’m happy to be in a good position but I don’t want to think too much about tomorrow. I just want to enjoy myself.
Playing with Sergio Garcia today, we had a big crowd following us. I told myself to just focus on my game and it went well. It’s been a good start to the year so far. I hope it will continue and hopefully more good things will come my way.
Johnson Poh (Sgp) – Third round 69 (-2), Total 210 (-3)
It’s been a blessing today. The weather was great. This is my eighth time playing the Singapore Open and it’s the first time I made the cut! I took a different approach this year. I am very excited to be playing this weekend.
I told myself to take it easy and just enjoy myself this week. Things came out well and I managed to make a few putts as well. It’s great to have my family coming out to support me this week. My dad and sister were here yesterday and my mum came today.
I am just really happy that I played a good round. The boys from the Singapore Golf Association were out to support me and James (Leow) who was playing behind me. It’s a good feeling. I am very happy to be out here and doing my part for golf in Singapore.
I won on the Asian Development Tour (ADT) last year. This year, I want to try and focus more on the Asian Tour. I will try and play all the events that I can get in. I would love to continue playing on the ADT as well because it’s a good training ground and it prepares you well for the Asian Tour events.
